There are many different types of protein powder available, but one of the most popular among bodybuilders is whey protein because whey is a complete protein that contains all of the essential amino acids, it's easy to digest, and it's also a good source of branched chain amino acids.
Scientific evidence has shown that consuming proteins high in essential amino acids (EAA) and branched chain amino acids (BCAA) have been associated with increased muscle protein synthesis and fat loss.
When it comes to whey protein supplements there are 3 major categories:
Whey Isolate:
This is the most expensive form of whey protein and it has the fat and lactose filtered out. Isolates contain approximately 90% protein. So that means if you have 10 grams of whey protein isolate powder, 9 grams is pure protein.
Whey Concentrate:
This is the cheapest form of whey protein. It is concentrated protein powder that still contains some of the fat and lactose. Concentrates contain approximately 70% protein. So for every 10 grams of whey protein concentrate powder, you're getting 7 grams of pure protein.
Whey Blends:
These are a blended combination of both whey isolates and whey concentrates. These are the moderately priced protein supplements and they make up the vast majority of the protein powders that you'll see in the supplement stores. Most whey protein blends contain approximately 80% protein. So for every 10 grams of powder, you're getting 8 grams of pure protein.

Whey Protein Isolate - VS - Whey Protein Concentrate
It really doesn't matter because they are all equally as good. Whey protein is whey protein and on a gram for gram basis it doesn't matter if you are using whey isolate, whey concentrate, or a blend of the two.
The only time it really makes sense to go out and buy the most expensive whey isolates is if you are lactose intolerant and have trouble digesting lactose. Or if you are really strict with your diet and you want to keep your fat and carbohydrate intake to a minimum, while consuming a pure protein supplement.
But as far as the muscle building properties of the actual protein itself, it makes no difference what type of whey protein you use because they all work equally as well.
