Stretch marks occur when the skin is stretched by rapid growth. Although the skin is usually fairly elastic, when it's overstretched, the normal production of collagen (the major protein that makes up the connective tissue in your skin) is disrupted. As a result, scars called stretch marks may form.
If you are noticing stretch marks on your body, you're not alone. Most bodybuilders will get stretch marks around their arms and chest. Especially young bodybuilders who are in their teens. This is because you are getting a double whammy effect from the natural growth spurt you get from puberty combined with the growth spurt you get from building muscle through weight training and bodybuilding.
The common places are around the biceps and the arm pit area where your chest and shoulder meets. These places have naturally thin skin and when you build muscle it forces the skin to stretch and thus causing a "stretch mark" (or several of them).
At first, stretch marks may show up as reddish or purplish lines that may appear indented and have a different texture from the surrounding skin. Fortunately, stretch marks often turn lighter and almost disappear over time.
However, you can help prevent stretch marks, or at least minimize them by regularly using skin moisturizers in the stretch mark prone areas (i.e. chest, shoulders, and arms). There are many different stretch mark creams and lotions available that are marketed towards pregnant women. Bodybuilders can use these lotions as well to keep the skin soft supple and provide the vital nutrients that the skin needs when under going rapid growth.
